Mark topics read clears the unread flag (the orange or white if read pape icon in the circle) the bold topics you have listed i believe are announcements.

I just reset the maximum size to 'unlimited'...
If it doesn't work this time it's probably because the hosting provider doesn't have imagemajick online. (Used by forum s/w for image manipulation)..

The spell checker mods that are available use google to check the words.
Sometimes the check can slow down the forum.
I'll look into the option, but right now I'm just trying to get the photo issues ironed out.
I think that grammar can sometimes be a bigger problem than spelling anyway.

Yes people will be able to post directly to the site by attaching pictures to posts as simply as browsing to the local file and clicking ok.
