"Plug-in installer"

#1 Post by subaru360nut »

So far I have been missing a lot because a lot of the videos(?)
are big gray boxes that say a plug in is necessary. I have
tried several suggestions on how to get this plug in but
none worked.

Today I got this message across the top of the page
something like "a plug-in is required to view messages on
this page" and over on the right is a box that says
INSTALL PLUG-IN

Is this legitimate and should I do it? Or has someone
hacked the website to promote a commercial product
or something that may be harmful to my computer?

I know this sounds stupid to most of you. I have
been a mechanic for 65 years but am a dummy on
computers and have had bad and sometimes
disastrous results clicking on boxes that claimed to
be from legitimate suppliers but were the opposite.

No matter how little you know about computers, Ed, there's someone who knows less -- me!

Ed, is there any further info in the pop-up message, about exactly what program it says you should download, or perhaps it refers to the type of file that is unable to be viewed? (i.e.; ".jpeg" for photos and pictures, ".doc" for text stuff, etc..) :?:

These sorts of messages do appear regularly on folks' computers, but it's good to be cautious all the same. I get the Adobe update message regularly, also the Flash Player message, along with the usual Windows updates of course. Another heads-up: if you say "ok" to the Adobe message, it then tries to get you to download Bing (I think) as your default search engine, which you can easily say no to - as long as you look CAREFULLY for the tiny, weeny little check box that says "No thanks" or similar!

If you cannot view videos, it's probably prudent to go seek out Windows Media Player yourself, rather than trust it all to an automatic message, especially if you are unsure. Go to the Microsoft website direct and search for the download page(s).

Then there's things called Codecs..... but let's keep it simple for now!

Cheers,

Ian

Ok Ed....
The newer 11.x versions of the flash player plugin have proven to be buggy with some Firefox configurations.

One work around is to downgrade back to version 10.3

The following document can help you get it done.

If you haven't installed the plugin previously, then jump to solution 2 step 2.
the older version will serve you well.

Jon - tried option 2, no change.

Went to Events page where Mark had posted Vancouver Wa meet

Got the usual big gray box.

I had already seen this u-tube video.

All the way across the top of the page, just below the lint that
shows what is on the topic (beg gray arrow at left)
is the following, I wrote it down so this is exact:
(small blue box), then "ADDITIONAL PLUGINS ARE REQUIRED
TO DISPLAY ALL THE MEDIA ON THIS PAGE"
(gap)then gray box with "Install Missing Plugins" in the box

Is that line something Firefox inserted, and if so should I
click on it?
OR
Is it something from another source that could be dangerous
to click on??

Sounds like a standard missing plugin dialogue.

You should be able to click and allow it to install the missing plugins.

Thanks Jon, it worked and I am looking forward
to seeing all those videos I have been missing.
