(sort of) new member, just outside of phila with a hotdog pu

#1 Post by eholtman »

Greetings,
I purchased a hot dog optioned pickup last summer (the red one in NJ, I think it was discussed here). I look forward to restoring it and using it to support events in my community, Narberth, PA. It needs a serious restoration and it will take a while (given the presence of an 8 month old son and a demanding family business).
I will get a couple pictures posted in the next week or so.
I actually joined the club about a 1/2 year ago and I've been enjoying a leisurely stroll through the BOR. It's great that there is such a strong community to support these vehicles (and their care-takers!).
We've already christened it the "happy wiener". Once we're serving dogs, we intend to use the tag line: "when was the last time you had a happy wiener?".
I will be posting momentarily in the 'wanted' section. I will need a good body donor to get my truck on the road. If anyone has one to sell or a lead on one, I would be most appreciative. I need a nice clean rust free body, but I'm not too concerned about the mechanicals as my purchase is pretty good on that front. Pluses (but not necessities) would be seat belts, Pleiades logo, set of good locks and key, clean title, and proximity to Philadelphia. I have good glass and doors. Long list, I know, but I'll hop on anything clean.
I look forward to learning enough to contribute to the discussions.
Also... very interested to connect with other 'mini-caterer' owners to learn more about the origins and restoration of this option.

Congratulations on getting that truck! The truck is the rarest 360, and the "factory hot dog vendor option" is rarer still! A few of us more local folks were all pondering that one last year. I myself couldn't find a place to hide it (g), and I already have plenty of projects. If you start selling hot dogs out of that thing I will take a drive from here in northern NJ just to get in line.

Be sure to post pictures here as you go!

For reference, here's a page of photos of another hot dog truck sold on ebay in '07
http://www.mysubaru360.com/photos/ebay/2007_08_21/

Also, if you need them you can download all the manuals and parts catalog from my page
http://www.mysubaru360.com/manuals_and_documents/

And here's another picture (from the club site) of one that was in NJ once upon a time...

Image

I think the most crucial part to find will be an umbrella with the Subaru logo on it!

Steve

This is as close as I am getting to that truck...

Forgot to mention that although I wish you luck, finding a "rust-free donor body" will likely be quite a challenge. AND if you do find one, the odds of it being local are small. Nothing is impossible to fix; it just takes plenty of time. Skills can be picked up along the way! If welding is not your thing, a trip to the bodyshop may be cheaper and faster than finding that "new body".

Thanks Bud, Steve,
Steve: those pictures are great and a great help. The blue truck is absolutely what I'm shooting for (is there a code for the factory blue?). I did a little searching (to no avail) to get info on the original equip. mfg. of the catering unit. I'm looking forward to polishing the stainless to a high shine.
As for the body, I am willing to look for a while and travel when the right one comes up... just had to list my goal. I've restored a number of classics and I've learned that not having to fix rust is always better than having to fix rust (though I can get out the welding gear when called upon).
I bought a copy of the sales sheet (on ebay). That's a great piece also. Thanks for your hosting of the manuals, I'm downloading now. (I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I nearly bought the one on ebay; thankfully I saw your thread in time.)

I believe that the truck only came in the same white as the sedan. I could be wrong.

I think to get the real info on the hot dog vendor you'll have to ask Malcolm Bricklin himself. I have never seen or heard of any company info on it, though it presumably came from Fuji Heavy Industries.

Re: your body work - I squirreled away some pictures that the previous owner emailed to another clubmember who was considering it - I see what appears to be a big chunk missing from the truck bed. I suppose the consolation is that the hot dog unit probably hides that! Is there anything structural about the part that was cut out?

That's my machine! and the seller.
There are two chunks missing: the front that you see and the other side. Whats missing is covered by the hot dogger. There's also a hideous bodge of fiberglass where the bed meets the cab. The doggers deleted the side gate and I wish to operate both ways, so I'd need a gate at a minimum; and I'd like the bed to look right without the dogger.
If you look at the pic, you can see the inside of the cab is (what appears to be) the original blue color. The red is a scheib job.
Also, the catering kit appears to have been manufactured in New York. I'll get the details off the tag next time I'm at the garage. Maybe someone else on the list will have some info based on that.

Made in New York - interesting. I would not have guessed that. If you can post a picture of that tag, that would be great.

By the way I just sorted through the roster and saw NO listings for a member with a pickup with a hot dog vendor.

ED: Do you know of another member that has one?

I will post the tag as soon as I set up a photo posting account. I have a nice pic of the tag; it reads as follows:

WOW. Now THAT lead somewhere! A quick googling of the address led to a "google books" reference to page 51 of the August 1965 Popular Mechanics magazine. Nestled between the "grow your own Bonsai for fun and profit" and "operate your own fix-it shop" was THIS:

Image

I also found what may be the current iteration of the Admar company,

http://www.800buycart.com/
I will write them and see what they can say about the Subaru "dogger"

That's funny... maybe Workman Carts can whoop up something for that!
I have thought that the Subie would fit well in the back of the econo for shows. The bed is 7' long (8'+ supported with tailgate down) and plenty wide enough (4' between wheel wells).

Looks like they came in blue too. The red one above is blue on the inside and the one on ebay right now ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-1 ... sQ5fTrucks ) is blue even under the factory decals that are peeling off.

Every original pickup I have seen that was imported by SOA was blue. Someone told me once that they had seen a tan one, but didn't know if it was a repaint. All the vans and sedans were off-white but the Youngs were available in TWO (2) COLORS, red and yellow.

Ed,
Do you know if there is a paint code for that blue or a cross-reference so that I can order the correct color? I doubt the local auto paint shops would have a chip for it. Failing that, I'll take a sample from under the seat or some other area not exposed to UV.
Thanks!

Eli - I do not have the paint code. I painted my pu red, and tricked it out as the World's Smallest Street-legal Fire Truck. If you want original color best bet is to have them match the inside, but painting it another color will not affect the value of the truck.

I have recently been in touch with an ebay seller of paint code charts. He is going to let me know if he can find anything that would be of use to us.

I was just looking through my photo bucket account.
I still have all the pictures from when it was for sale.

I had been seriously thinking about picking it up.

You might try ordering a spray can from http://www.automotivetouchup.com/choose ... earch.y=11 they list a "Medium Blue" as a color for 1970 Subaru (that agrees with the chart above). If that matches then you have your paint code.
